Almost exactly a year ago today, we bought our first house. Something I had dreamt about for so many years! My own little sanctuary to be the introverted homebody in my soul. Of course I was eager to paint, furnish and decorate too. We bought a renovated cottage from the late 80's. Since it was a recent flip, there were no major changes to the bones of the house. One of the first things we did after buying the house was extending the back porch slab. Best decision ever!(my husband was right, but don't tell him I said so!) We also painted an accent wall black and shiplapped a small wall. I almost immediately changed out 3 light fixtures and put ceiling fans in the upstairs rooms where there were just flush mounts. I was determined to get my house pinterest worthy in record time. My daughters birthday party was in 2 weeks and we were having a housewarming party soon after so I just couldn't have my brand new house not looking perfect, right? *eye roll* thumps myself on the head.
I spent so much time and money furnishing my house. However, I did it in such a short time it was not methodical at all. If I could do it over, I would. I know it's hard looking at a house that isn't "perfect", but the truth is, it never will be. I love change, I love the process of change and styles are always evolving, so like your wardrobe, your decor will too. Shop the basics, and I mean basics. Couch, bed, appliances; these are the things worth splurging on. Do you have pets, kids, a lot of company? These are things to keep in mind when purchasing a couch. You also are going to want to keep these items for as long as possible, so decide on a style that can be versatile while still complimenting your current aesthetic. That leads me to my next point, what is your style? If you are like me, its not just one. Narrow it down to the top 3 you gravitate towards and work with all of them in ways where they will play nicely together. I have learned over the year that my 3 styles are modern, scandi and eclectic. I probably wouldnt have said modern a year ago, however, the clean lines of modern have been something I've liked for a long time. This is why thought and inspiration is so important. Do not be afraid to take inspiration from pinterest and your favorite home decor IG accounts.
Here I am a year later purging my house, realizing I was just trying to fill space. I want a do over, so that is what I'm going to do. I want to take you all along my journey of purposefully and mindfully creating a functional home for my family. I want to go in depth through this journey and hopefully find some tips and tricks to pass along. However, I do not want to be distracted or consumed by it. As cliche as it sounds, a beautiful home isnt the things inside, but the people.
Here are some pictures after renovations, before furnishings and decor. Let's get back to the basics shall we?
Do I believe in love at first sight? Not until I laid my eyes on this headboard at a yard sale. I wouldn't consider my design style eclectic, but I do enjoy eclectic pieces. This. Was. It. In its pink and gold glory. I had no need for a headboard at this particular time and it was listed for $80! So you think I would move on to the nearest $5 item I could put to use right? Nope! I batted my eyelashes and put on my whiny voice for my negotiator husband. $20 later were loading it into the bed of the truck. From that point on, she sat in the spare bedroom for a good year. When we bought our house last July, we knew we wanted to downsize our cali king and this headboard was the perfect size. However, the color was not. After searching pinterest, I found some informative tutorials on painting fabric. Me being me, I never follow things exactly. I must always do something a little different. I figured I would share that with you all. Before you read on, I must preface and tell you tha...
